Frequently asked questions
‘HACCP’ stands for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points and is a food safety and risk assessment plan that was initially developed in the 1960s by NASA to provide safe food for the space program. Today, HACCP principles form the basis of Food Safety Programs that are accepted worldwide. HACCP principles can be applied to processes throughout every stage of the food supply chain and are used to manage food safety across many different types of food businesses.
“BRC” stands for British Retail Consortium, a food safety standard started in the United Kingdom, but is used globally. BRC certification in Canada provides the assurance that food companies are meeting global standards for food safety, packaging and packaging materials, storage and distribution, and consumer products. BRC is a GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) -recognized standard that requires organizations to have rigorous traceability systems in place, effective management of food safety, and appropriate preventive measures. The AA rating is the highest rating a food company can achieve.
